Al Faya · private residence

Day into night.

One house that looks like two buildings depending on the hour. Scroll, and the light moves with you.

Four volumes,
one shadow.

The house is four concrete volumes set a metre apart, so the gaps between them do the cooling the air conditioning would otherwise have to.

Glass faces north and the pool sits on the shaded side. Nothing here is a style decision that the heat did not make first.

Inside.

Three rooms that decide how the rest of the house gets used.

The long room

Eighteen metres end to end, kitchen at one end and nothing at the other. That emptiness is deliberate.

North glass

The only fully glazed wall. It never takes direct sun, so it never needs a blind.

The courtyard

Open to the sky, shaded on three sides — the part of the house used most and costing least.

Built quietly, on purpose.

Rammed earth walls, local aggregate, and a roof that carries its own water. The house runs off grid for nine months of the year.

See it at the right hour.

Viewings are held at six in the morning or six in the evening. There is a reason for that.
